The Transition movement recognizes the twin challenges of Peak Oil and Climate Change and aims to work towards alleviating global warming & economic turmoil by reducing our dependence on fossil fuels as the supply of cheap plentiful oil declines.

 

The Transition Network was started in Totnes.

 

On 23rd July 2008 Cllr Paul Buchanan proposed a motion that SCC support the Transition Movement in Somerset. The motion was passed unanimously and history was made.  The Transition Towns Movement was recognized by the Somerset County Council along with the reality of Peak Oil and SCC is committed to supporting Somerset towns in achieving their Transition goals and seeks to become the first Transition Authority in UK.

 

On 18th September 2008 North Curry and Stoke St Gregory launched their combined Transition initiative.
Action groups under the following headings were convened:-
Education (e.g. further awareness-raising, school activities permaculture courses)
Food & Agriculture (local food, community garden/orchard)
Housing (energy-saving, grant information, micro-generation)
Woodland (tree planting, fuel, food) - Stoke tree planting project and White Street woodland in North Curry planned
